ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Two people were hospitalized after a fire broke out at a St. Pete home on Wednesday morning.

St. Petersburg Fire Rescue responded just after 9:30 a.m. to a one-story duplex on 33rd Avenue N off of 34th Street. They arrived to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the home.

Before firefighters arrived, a St. Petersburg police officer helped a person climb out of a window to get to safety. Fire crews helped three more people evacuate safely.

Firefighters began an “aggressive” interior attack on the fire, successfully containing it and preventing it from spreading to a nearby home.

Two people were evaluated on scene and hospitalized for further medical care. Crews are continuing to conduct overhaul operations and check for any hidden fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
