Tallahassee physician shares tips on managing spring allergies

  • March 4, 2026

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – As springlike weather arrives, so do seasonal allergies for many people. Pollen, along with certain trees and grasses, can trigger allergic reactions this time of year.

Dr. Del Carter with the TMH Family Medicine Residency Program shared how reactions occur.

“A lot of inflammatory cells and things get ramped up in people who are more sensitive,” Carter said.

Common symptoms include irritation in the nose and eyes, a runny nose, red or watery eyes and post-nasal drip, according to Carter.

He said there are steps people can take to ease symptoms.

“Nasal sprays are often helpful, and things at home, making sure you have good quality air filters and you change those regularly if you have allergies, you might have a higher quality one that can filter out more particles,” Carter said.

He also suggested keeping windows closed to help minimize exposure.

Carter added that over-the-counter medications can also help relieve symptoms. However, if symptoms become severe, people should see a doctor.

He said that fatigue or a fever may signal a different illness. Those symptoms are more commonly linked to a cold or the flu rather than seasonal allergies.
