Save Our Soundwaves 2: Electric Boogaloo

On Thursday, March 19, music fans, local artists, and supporters of community radio will gather at Crowbar for a night of live music benefiting WMNF 88.5 FM. Events like this help keep independent, volunteer-powered media alive in Tampa Bay.

WMNF has always been a little different from corporate radio. The station is powered almost entirely by volunteers who curate shows, man the boards 24/7 and take requests, We support local musicians and make space for voices that don’t usually get airtime elsewhere. When you support WMNF, you’re supporting the people who donate their time and passion to keep community radio on the air.

And of course, the night is specifically about the music. The lineup features four great local bands:

Liquid Pennies: This trio is gaining a reputation for their blending psych electronic prog rock studio albums that translate wonderfully to the stage.
Cozy in the Black:  Post-punk revival band blending grunge, punk, and new wave into a sound they refer to as “afro-futurism witch doctor punk.
Sorry Barb: Harmonious folk art pop at its finest.
Lobster’s Gyro Shack: Irreverent rockers who take food very seriously.

WMNF shows like this showcase the wide variety of sounds and scenes in the Tampa Bay musical community. And as many listeners know, Crowbar is closing this year making this one of the last WMNF events at the Ybor City fixture.

If you recently donated for the WMNF Spring Fund Drive, then this show is for you. If you didn’t donate, then it is even more important to come out. If you care about community radio, local artists, and the spaces that bring people together, come out and be part of it. Independent media survives when the community shows up. This is one of those nights.
