Tallahassee man sentenced for escaping while temporarily released from prison, U.S. Attorney’s Office says

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – A Tallahassee man is sentenced to two years in federal prison for escaping from custody, according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office of the Northern District of Florida.

46-year-old Derek Somerset was serving a 48-month sentence for possessing a firearm as a convicted felon at the Federal Correctional Institute at Hazelton. On Oct. 15, 2024, Somerset was furloughed and expected to complete his sentence at a residential re-entry facility in Tallahassee, per the press release.

Authorities said that Somerset did not report there and was found two months later in a motel parking lot.

He later pleaded guilty to escaping from the custody of the Attorney General and the Attorney General’s authorized representative.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office of the Northern District of Florida said it was a joint investigation between the Tallahassee Police Department and the United States Marshals Service.
