HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. — Plans for the Fletcher District near the University of South Florida are moving forward.
The USF project would redevelop the school’s former golf course into a mixed-use development and connect it to the nearby on campus football stadium.

The area would include housing, restaurants, retail shops and an academic research facility.
On Wednesday, Hillsborough County commissioners unanimously approved $24 million for infrastructure and public safety improvements. About $10 million of that will go toward building a pedestrian bridge over Fletcher Avenue connecting the district to the school’s new on-campus stadium, opening in fall 2027.
It’s something commissioners say is important because of the other popular attractions that bring a lot of traffic, like the Yuengling Center and Busch Gardens.
“They (USF) show and auger the fact that there is going to be more pedestrian and vehicle traffic in this area than ever before,” said District 1 Commissioner Harry Cohen. “And we have got to invest in this, or we are not going to be able to capitalize on all of these different things and the convergence of all of them together.”
Construction on the project is expected to begin in the spring and should wrap up in 2028.
