MIAMI-DADE, Fla. (CBS12) — Miami-Dade Fire Rescue crews remain on scene Friday morning as a massive commercial fire continues to burn.

Officials say the response has stretched through the night and will likely continue for several days as firefighters work to keep the flames contained near NW 206th Street and 47th Avenue.

Assistant Chief of Emergency Response Jason Richard said around 100 firefighters, along with operations and support personnel, are actively working to hold the fire within the original building.

“We continued our operations overnight to contain the fire to the original occupancy, and those efforts will continue throughout the next several days,” Richard said. “We’re working to, again, contain the fire to the building. It’s difficult to completely extinguish because of the size and the amount of material inside the building that’s been burning.”

The fire, fueled by heavy amounts of stored materials inside the structure, has proven stubborn to fully put out. Crews are rotating through long shifts as they work with aerial units, water tankers, and ground teams to suppress hotspots and prevent further spread, according to Richard.

Throughout the response, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said it is coordinating with environmental and health agencies, including the Environmental Protection Agency, Miami-Dade County’s Department of Environmental Resources Management (DERM), and specialized HAZMAT units. Together, they are monitoring air quality conditions around the fire zone.

Richard urged caution for residents and workers in surrounding neighborhoods.

“We continue to work with the EPA, DERM, and our HAZMAT personnel to continuously monitor air quality in the area,” he said. “We’re asking anybody with medical conditions or respiratory issues to remain out of this area, if at all possible.”
