FREEPORT, Ill. (WIFR) – An investigation is underway for the cause of a fire Thursday morning that destroyed a home in Freeport.
Just before 8 a.m., March 5, fire crews were called out to the area of Miami Ave. and Garden St. for a report of smoke coming from a home.
When firefighters arrived they found heavy smoke showing at a two-story home in the 1000 block of S. Miami Avenue.
Crews aggressively battled the fire for several hours before it was fully extinguished. Reports say Freeport Fire Department was on scene for about eight hours.
All residents safely evacuated before crews arrived and no injuries were reported in the fire.
Officials say the home suffered severe damage and was deemed a total loss.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Freeport Police Department, the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal and the Freeport Fire Department Fire Marshal.
