Tallahassee Police could receive pay raise worth $9M after city commission vote next week

  • March 6, 2026

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – City of Tallahassee police officers and investigators could receive a pay raise based on the result of a city commission vote next week.

The proposed agreement between the city and the Big Bend Chapter of the Florida Police Benevolent Association, Inc (PBA) is a new three-year contract from 2027 to 2029, per the city’s agenda. The city commission meeting is Wednesday, March 11.

“The estimated three-year cost for the wage component of the agreement is $8,927,884, from FY27 through FY29. It is expected that the cost of the wage and pension components for FY27 will be approximately $4.865M,” per the city’s agenda.

According to the proposed contract, pay for the starting sergeant is going from $91,000 to $101,000. The starting lieutenant pay goes from roughly $109,000 to $120,000.

Per the city’s agenda, officials propose that officers receive a “market-competitive salary” starting in 2027, with a starting salary of $71,000. They also propose an annual step progression in 2027, 2028 and 2029.

The current contract is up on September 20, 2026, according to the city agenda.

The city agenda said the pros of approving the new contract are that it allows TPD to have a “competitive advantage” in hiring, retention and increasing the number of officers in the department. The downside is the fiscal impact.

The city agenda lists no pros to not approving the new contract, though it says disapproving could cause a delay in budgeting and pay.

The Tallahassee Police Department’s new headquarters is set to be completed by December this year after being delayed. Tallahassee Police is expected to move in shortly after 2027, per previous reporting.

Other items of note in the city’s commission meeting are a potential sale of many acres of downtown Tallahassee land and the transfer of Tallahassee Memorial Hospital to Florida State University.
