JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Mason Hughes had four hits to back Connor Marshburn’s dominant start as UNCW topped host Jacksonville, 8-3, on Friday in the opening game of a series at John Sessions Stadium.
The Seahawks picked up their first series-opening win of the season and climbed to 8-6 on the season. The Dolphins, who have dropped their last four, moved to 9-5.
For Hughes, his four hits were a career high. He collected three infield hits and a homer in the ninth, a two-run shot to right, which was the first of his career. Hughes scored three runs and knocked in three.
Marshburn (1-2) picked up his first win of the season with a season-high eight strikeouts over 6.1 innings. He allowed four hits and walked one.
Four other Seahawks had two-hit games, including Kevin Jones, Trevor Lucas, Cole Nelson, and Josh Martinez.
Walsh (3-1) took the loss for JU, allowing two runs, one earned, in 5.1 innings of work. He struck out seven before making way for the bullpen.
Logan Baratta finished with two hits for the Dolphins, who were limited to five hits. Sam Grunberg doubled in two runs in the seventh inning.
The series resumes on Saturday with a 2 p.m. start.
