TAMPA, FL — The driver in a fatal hit-and-run crash that claimed the life of a woman walking near N. 50th Street and E. 30th Avenue on Monday night, Tampa police said in a news release.
The crash happened around 8 p.m. when the victim, a woman in her mid-50s, was fatally struck by a vehicle heading south on N. 50th Street.
The vehicle that hit her left the scene, police said. She was hit by a second vehicle whose driver stopped, called 911 and cooperated with investigators.
Investigators recovered evidence from the scene, including parts from the car that hit the woman and left the scene. They determined the parts belonged to the passenger-side mirror of a 2018 to 2024 gray Volkswagen Tiguan.
Camera footage from the area caught images of a Volkswagen Tiguan with damage consistent with the crash, police said.
On Tuesday, an officer spotted a vehicle matching the suspect’s description at an ATM near W. Hillsborough Avenue and N. Armenia Avenue.
Officers found the driver, Jeramey Sanders, 30, at a nearby store and detained him.
The damage to the vehicle and additional evidence collected matched those from the crash scene. Records also showed that Sanders’ Florida driver’s license is suspended.\
Sanders was charged with leaving the scene of a crash with death and violation of financial responsibility law.
“The quick work of detectives and the attentiveness of patrol officers led to a swift arrest in this tragic case,” Chief Lee Bercaw said. “We hope that this timely resolution provides the victim’s family with a first step toward closure during this incredibly difficult time.”
