Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier was arrested by the FBI in Orlando, Fla., in relation to the federal gambling investigation the NBA launched in January, investigative journalist Pablo Torre first reported early Thursday morning.
Rozier, 31, did not play in Wednesday’s season opener against the Orlando Magic.
Rozier has been directly linked to a federal gambling investigation after a professional bettor allegedly placed a total of 30 wagers on Rozier’s unders for points, rebounds and assists in a March 23, 2023, game when he was with the Charlotte Hornets. He finished with just five points, four rebounds and two assists and left after 10 minutes with a foot issue.
Initially, there was no conclusive evidence found by the NBA or investigators that Rozier was part of any wrongdoing. Though Thursday’s arrest appears to suggest otherwise.
The Heat acquired the 6-foot-1 guard in January of 2024 in exchange for Kyle Lowry and a 2027 lottery-protected first-round pick. He is coming off the worst season of his career in 2024-25. Rozier averaged 10.6 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.7 assists while shooting just 39.1 percent from the floor and 29.5 percent from 3-point range.
There has been no official announcement, but it can be assumed that Rozier will likely be suspended by either the team or the league until further notice.
According to the Sun Sentinel’s Ira Winderman in July, a league-wide suspension would “afford the Heat salary-cap and luxury tax relief of 50% of the salary lost during a suspension.” Rozier is on the books for $26.6 million ($24.9 million guaranteed) this season, the final year of his current contract, according to Spotrac.
