Man shot and killed while driving with child

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla – St. Pete police are investigating a homicide after they say someone shot a man who then crashed his car with an 18-month-old girl inside.

What we know:

Investigators say they responded shortly after 2 p.m. Sunday after a vehicle crashed into a parked car at Robco Transmission & Auto, located at 3101 Emerson Ave. S.

It was then discovered that the driver had suffered a gunshot wound. He was rushed to the hospital, where he died from his injuries.

“It kind of elevates the situation a little bit,” Ashley Limardo, a public information officer with the St. Pete Police Department, said. “It is still very sad and a scary time for the family of the driver, but as well now, we do have an 18-month-old that was sitting in the back seat, and, thankfully, she is okay, but could you have imagined if it was worse than that?”

The 18-month-old passenger is okay and is with family.

Police canvassed the area on Sunday afternoon, looking for witnesses and surveillance camera footage.

“Hopefully, some any residents that may have cameras on their property, if they can check the time it happened, after 2 p.m. on Sunday, if there’s anything that they think could be useful,” Limardo said.

What we don’t know:

Investigators have not released details on a possible suspect or what may have led to the shooting. On Monday, police said they’re still trying to identify a person of interest or suspect.

Detectives are trying to figure out where Howard was shot, in relation to where the crash happened.

“The details in between and how it all happened is something that our detectives are currently trying to figure out,” Limardo said.
