Stuart man arrested for second DUI in less than two months
SHOOTING AND THE SUSPECT. SHE JOINS US NOW WITH THE LATEST. WELL, PORTIONS OF 12TH STREET HERE IN VERO BEACH WERE SHUT DOWN FOR HOURS WHILE SHERIFF’S DEPUTIES CONDUCTED THEIR INVESTIGATION. SOUNDS LIKE A SOUND LIKE THAT. CHRISTINA STONE SAYS SHE WAS TAKING OUT THE GARBAGE MONDAY NIGHT WHEN SHE HEARD GUNSHOTS OUTSIDE THE STORE WHERE SHE WORKS. ALL OF A SUDDEN, I HEARD, LIKE, AN AUTOMATIC WEAPON, SOUND LIKE 20 SHOTS AT A TIME. AND I WENT UP HERE AND I SEEN, LIKE, FIVE COPS. THIS WAS THE SCENE LAST NIGHT. OFFICIALS SAY LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS WITH THE U.S. MARSHAL SERVICE, THE INDIAN RIVER COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE, AND THE MARTIN COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE WERE TRYING TO TAKE A SUSPECT INTO CUSTODY. A MAN WANTED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT IN COLORADO. WHEN THEY SAY HE FIRED SHOTS AT THEM. OFFICERS THEN RETURNED FIRE USING BOTH LETHAL AND LESS LETHAL ROUNDS. THE SUSPECT, IDENTIFIED AS 72 YEAR OLD THOMAS STEVENS, WAS SHOT FOUR TIMES. THE TEAM THAT WAS INVESTIGATING THIS HAD CONSTANT INTEL THAT THIS SUSPECT HAD MADE STATEMENTS THAT HE WAS GOING TO GO OUT IN A BLAZE, THAT HE WAS GOING TO KILL MULTIPLE LAW ENFORCEMENT. I BELIEVE THE NUMBER WAS THREE. OFFICIALS SAY THAT’S WHEN HE FIRED SHOTS AT THEM AND THEY RETURNED FIRE AT ONE POINT, USING BOTH LETHAL AND LESS LETHAL ROUNDS. OFFICIALS RELEASED THESE PHOTOS OF THE VEHICLE SHOWING BULLET HOLES. THE SUSPECT WAS SHOT FOUR TIMES. HE’S EXPECTED TO SURVIVE. OFFICIALS SAY HE’S A FORMER NEUROSURGEON WHO HAD BEEN ON THE RUN SINCE FEBRUARY 25TH FOR ALLEGEDLY DRUGGING AND RAPING A WOMAN IN COLORADO, AND THAT HE HAD ONLY BEEN IN FLORIDA FOR 24 HOURS BEFORE HIS ARREST. I’M HAPPY THAT THE RESIDENTS OF INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, IN THIS CASE, NO ONE, WAS HURT, AND I’M APPALLED, OF COURSE, THAT THE ACTIONS OF A DOCTOR WHO HAS A POSITION OF TRUST, WHO TOOK THAT POSITION, VIOLATED IT, AND THEN CONTINUED TO VIOLATE IT BY COMING DOWN HERE TO, TO TO FLORIDA AND ENGAGING OUR DEPUTIES, OUR MARSHALS IN A GUN BATTLE IN VERO BEACH, ANGELA ROZIER, WPBF 25 NEWS.
