JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Brown softball (1-8) came up shy in a comeback bid against Jacksonville (4-3) and fell to Southern Miss (18-2 – five innings) to begin Saturday (March 7) at Jacksonville University.
Maggie Foxx and Elli Thompson each collected two hits for Brown on the day.
SOUTHERN MISS 18, BROWN 2 (5 innings)
Brown dropped its first game on Saturday in five innings to Southern Miss. The Golden Eagles used a 10-run second inning to take control of the game. Brown struggled in the circle, issuing 14 walks on the afternoon.
Cameron Zytkewicz Ray led Brown’s offense with two hits and Maggie Foxx picked up another hit.
The Bears two runs came in the bottom of the fourth as Foxx doubled to the wall in left center to start off the inning. Zytkewicz Ray singled up the middle to put runners on the corners and moved to second on a passed ball. Another passed ball allowed Foxx to cross the plate for Brown’s first run.
Amanda Deng brought across the Bears’ second run with a sacrifice fly to score Zytkewicz Ray.
JACKSONVILLE 4, BROWN 3
Brown staged a late-inning comeback but allowed a walk-off to Jacksonville for a 4-3 loss to close the night against the Dolphins.
The four Bears at the top of the order combined for five of Brown’s six hits. Elli Thompson picked up two hits to lead the lineup. Both Maggie Foxx and Cameron Zytkewicz Ray picked up RBI for Brown.
Macy Borowski threw 6.2 innings, allowing four runs on eight hits and struck out 10 batters. Borowski walked five, including a bases loaded walk to end the game.
Jacksonville started the game off with a two-run double in bottom of the first to get the scoring started and added a third run on an infield single in the second.
The Bears first run of the game came in the top of the fourth. Jasmine Hsiao started the inning with a single up the middle and moved to second on an infield single by Thompson. Back-to-back flyouts moved Hsiao around for to score.
The top of the sixth began with Thompson doubling to the wall in center. Foxx singled to right center to score Thompson and an error by Jacksonville’s center fielder allowed Foxx to get to third. Two batters later, Zytkewicz Ray hit a sac fly to score Foxx and tie the game.
The Dolphins loaded the bases with no outs in the seventh, but Borowski got a strikeout for the first out and a ground ball to third went home to get the second out. Brown would not get another chance at bat as a walk brought home the winning run for the Dolphins.
UP NEXT
Brown will close out the weekend with a single game at Jacksonville on Sunday (March 7) with first pitch scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
