Fifteen North Carolina women were recognized as part of the Queens Ball Gala and Awards in Jacksonville, Saturday.

Colorful voices of sisterhood was founded by four women of diverse backgrounds who are passionate about celebrating what organizers call “unsung heroes.” Fetihya Ahmed is one of the four founders of the group. And she says events like the gala are all part of their mission.

It’s the perspective of sisterhood. Sometimes a lot of women, people say, they don’t get along. We are trying to be an example for the next generation to come.

Ashley Weaver is one of the 15 recipients of an award at the gala event. She received the award for Excellence in leadership in public safety through her roll as the deputy chief of police of the Jacksonville Police Department.

They just reached out and said that someone has nominated me for this award and I’m truly humbled and honored to be part of it. I am the deputy chief of police for the Jacksonville Police Department.

All of the women honored tonight were nominated by the community that they serve. And were able to enjoy the night full of celebration, music and more.
