Sunday vs. Miami: W, 9–5

Boston College baseball made history on Sunday afternoon by beating No. 24 Miami 9–5, sweeping the weekend series on the road for the first time in program history.

BC (9–6, 2–1 Atlantic Coast) started strong in its first ACC series of the season, stealing two wins on the Hurricanes’ (12–4, 1–2) home field. In a similar fashion to other games in the series, the Eagles found their rhythm in the middle innings and pulled away late.

Miami’s Derek Williams hit an RBI single in the bottom of the first, scoring Jake Ogden to put the Hurricanes up 1–0.

BC formed a strong response, however. Jack Toomey began the second inning with a double to left field, then Esteban Garcia shot a single to shallow right to bring Toomey home and tie the game 1–1.

Luke Gallo and Garcia built on the momentum, executing a double steal on second and third. Cesar Gonzalez grounded out to third and Garcia used the play to score, giving the Eagles a 2–1 lead.

BC built on the lead at the top of the fourth, as Gonzalez sent a three-run homer deep into left field, sending BC to a 5–1 advantage.

Miami responded with a solo home run from Williams to open the bottom of the fourth. Then, Fabio Peralta delivered a single to shallow left field, scoring Dylan Dubovik and Vance Sheahan to cut the Hurricanes’ deficit to 5–4.

Peralta advanced to second after stealing a base, then to third after Michael Torres reached on a throwing error. He eventually brought it home to tie up the game 5–5 on an RBI single from Daniel Cuvet.

BC regained control in the fifth when Gallo delivered a two-RBI single to score Toomey and Garcia, bumping the Eagles up 7–5. Nick Wang added insurance in the seventh with a solo homer, extending BC’s advantage to three.

The win was set in stone when Garcia hit a sacrifice fly to bring Julio Solier home, wrapping the series up with a 9–5 BC win.

Saturday vs. Miami: L, 5–3

Despite a late-game effort to come back, Miami’s three runs in the first inning of Saturday’s matchup put the game too far out of BC’s reach, and the Eagles never caught up as they fell 5–3 in their sole loss of the weekend.

Thanks to a fielding error, a bases-loaded walk, and a sacrifice fly, the Hurricanes dominated the opening frame 3–0. Tyler Mudd got the start and struggled on the mound at points throughout his stint, giving up three walks, four hits, and five runs in four innings pitched.

To kick off the second, Gallo grounded to first, allowing Toomey to run home and cut Miami’s lead to 3–1. But back-to-back Hurricane home runs during the third and fourth innings extended their lead to four.

BC rallied with two runs in the top of the eighth, both coming after two outs.

Solier singled to right center, and Ty Mainolfi slammed a double down the left field line that put both players in scoring position. Nick Wang’s 2RBI double to center field drove both runners home, but BC’s late efforts weren’t enough to overcome Miami as the Eagles fell 5–3.

Friday vs. Miami: W, 8–7

The Eagles began their three-game series with an 8–7 upset win over the ranked Hurricanes on Friday, setting the tone for the weekend.

Despite the Eagles ultimately securing the win, it was an uphill battle for BC. Miami struck first in the opening inning thanks to an RBI single from Daniel Cuvet. Michael Torres scored from first base thanks to a fielding error by Colin Larson on the play, putting Miami up 2–0.

The Hurricanes racked up a three-run homer from Dylan Dubovik in the second, extending Miami’s lead 5–0.

A Mainolfi double down the left field line allowed Owen DeShazo to score from second in the top of the third, putting BC on the board. On the very next at-bat, Wang launched his fourth homer of the season into deep center field, bringing the Eagles within one, trailing 5–4.

The Hurricanes returned fire, generating a run to close out the third 6–4. The scoring then halted until the seventh, when Brylan West scored from second on a single by Dubovik.

In the nick of time, though, BC responded. Gallo singled down the right-field line in the top of the ninth, scoring Toomey. Kyle Wolff went in to pinch hit and delivered, tying the game at 7–7 with a sacrifice fly that allowed Esteban Garcia to run home.

BC held Miami scoreless in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings. At the top of the eleventh, the Eagles loaded the bases after a hit-by-pitch, a bunt single, and a walk. Solier struck out looking on a dropped third strike, but Garcia scored on the play to give BC an 8–7 win.
