ORLANDO, Fla. — The conflict in Iran has caused continued effects to gas prices here at home. In Florida, AAA data shows gas prices have jumped up 60 cents in the last week, so every trip down the road is costing more.
Soon, your trip up in the airplane could cost more, too.

Experts expect around a 20% to 30% increase, but some ticket prices have already increased

Travelers are paying attention to the prices.
“We will be coming back in August, and I did already look at airline prices, and they have gone up since I looked originally,” said Michelle Gilson, who is visiting Orlando from Buffalo.
In some cases, prices for plane tickets have already gone up. But it’s hard to say if that is airlines adjusting for oil prices or the demand to buy driving up costs.
“It is very hard to predict. Certainly there is a lot of instability in the market,” said Shem Malmquist, a professor of aeronautics at Florida Tech.
Malmquist said whether airlines are proactively raising prices or waiting day by day, it will likely be months before they stabilize.
“It is going to be an interesting situation for a while, certainly that will push up the cost. Anyone who has not already purchased a ticket is looking at higher prices,” Malmquist said.
Gilson said her recent trip was not affected, but she knows reality will hit once she gets home.
“My commute is an hour each way, so that will definitely increase my budget,” she said. “So I will have to budget more for gas and less for something else.”

“The oil market is freaking out about it because we just don’t know when deliveries will resume, and so that is a major interruption in the global supply chain,” said Mark Jenkins, a spokesperson for AAA.
There is plenty of supply in the U.S., but 20% of the world’s supply traveling through the Strait of Hormuz is completely halted due to safety concerns.
“Hopefully, this initial shock wears off in a few days, but we are just going to have to take it day by day,” Malmquist said.
Most spring break trips are booked, but summer travel could see a bigger shift depending on flight and gas prices.
“Maybe depending on the price of the flight, we might have to drive instead,” Gilson said.
Orlando is a top destination for spring break travel in the coming weeks. A spokesperson for AAA said people will still come but might cut back on other activities to cut down on their expenses.
It’s too early to tell when prices will cool off, as everything is so uncertain right now. Experts say that prices are quick to jump up and often slow to come back down, so we are still in the going-up phase. We will have a much better idea once ships start traveling through the Strait of Hormuz again.
