Loved ones told dispatchers they had searched the home and the surrounding area before calling 911, but were unable to locate him.
When officers arrived, they confirmed Zam was not inside the residence. During the search, investigators reviewed surveillance video and discovered that the child opened the garage door and walked away from the home around 7:15 p.m., heading east and out of camera view. Police say Zam did not know how to swim.
The department deployed extensive resources, including drone units, K-9 teams, and additional road patrol officers, to track the child on the ground and from the air.
But tragically, at 9:45 p.m., search teams located Zam in a body of water near the intersection of SW Juliet and SW Hampshire Lane, according to the news release.
Officers immediately began CPR until St. Lucie County Rescue Units arrived and transported him to Tradition Medical Center. Despite lifesaving efforts, Zam was pronounced dead around 11 p.m.
