Tallahassee commission votes to sell 5 acres of downtown property to build hotel, apartments in $11M deal

  • March 11, 2026

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – The Tallahassee City Commission voted to sell of 5 acres of land in downtown on Wednesday.

The sale, totaling $11 million, includes two parcels of land labelled as the 2.41-acre “Chevron” block and the 2.68-acre “Johns” block.

The city voted to sell to 908 Group, a developer responsible for other downtown developments like The Nine and StateHouse Woodard.

The developer plans to build a 239-unit apartment building, which could be marketed as student housing, and a 144-room hotel with a restaurant.

One public speaker raised concerns about the development, asking commissioners to consider other options for the space.

“What else could go there that’s not the same as what’s all around it,” the speaker said. “We keep losing cultural and historical institutions in the area.”

The speaker also brought up a concern about the apartments being marketed as student housing, since student apartments could sit empty when school is not in session.

A spokesperson for 908 Groups said the project would be mixed-use and connect campus to downtown, describing it as a “transition zone,” rather than just student housing.

Ultimately, the commission voted 4-1 for the sale. Commissioner Dianne Williams-Cox was the lone no vote.

Her concern is that the developer had not met with the full commission, but had met with Commissioner Jeremy Matlow as part of the Downtown Improvement Authority, before the sale had been approved.
