PENSACOLA, Fla. – Baseball kicked off the Studer’s Blue Wahoos Stadium Challenge Wednesday evening. They took on the Carroll Pios in nonconference action. The Eagles (4-3) got things started off on the right foot, holding off a late rally for a 11-10 extra innings victory over the Pios (7-4).
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
– A pair of big hits in early innings had the Eagles ahead 4-0 after two. A two-RBI triple to left center from Jacob Carney in the first and a two-run homer from Carter Kelley in the second paved the way for the early lead.
 
– The Pios left their mark in the fifth. A sacrifice grounder to short kicked off the scoring, while mistakes from Edgewood University helped cut the lead to 4-3.
 
– Kelley continued to contribute offensively in the sixth inning, a sacrifice fly to center plating a run. Hayden Hellenbrand took a hit by pitch with the bases loaded to add another run, before Hellenbrand added on an eighth-inning single for a 7-3 edge.
 
– Carroll stormed back in the eighth. A pair of singles, a fielder’s choice, and a sacrifice fly pushed them ahead 8-7. The Eagles pulled back ahead 10-8 in the top of the ninth with a throwing error and a Carter Kelley two-RBI double to right field. The Pios struck back to force extras with a sacrifice fly and a RBI single in the bottom of the ninth.
 
– Edgewood University got on the board in the top of the tenth, an Aidan Kammer triple to right bring in in a run. While Carroll once more threatened with a runner on second with one out, the Eagles shut down the threat for a well-earned victory.
 

 
– Carney, Mac Vesperman, and Kelley each recorded two this to pace the squad. Carney earned a double and a triple, while Kelley posted five RBIs.
 
– 10 different Edgewood University players earned at least one run in the win.
 
Kyle Prindle tallied three walks.
 
Aiden Shumaker struck out six in the start, allowing only three runs.
 
Cole Pulliam stepped up in the end to clamp down on the Pios, striking out three in two innings pitched to claim the victory.

The Eagles will continue action at the Studer’s Blue Wahoos Stadium Challenge Friday. They will battle with Grinnell in Pace, Fla. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
