PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. (CBS12) — Communities in South Florida and across the country are expressing concern after a violent attack unfolded Thursday at Temple Israel, a major Reform synagogue in West Bloomfield, Michigan.

Michigan authorities say a man armed with a rifle rammed a vehicle into the building before being fatally shot by synagogue security. No congregants, students, or staff inside were hurt, though a security officer was knocked unconscious after being struck by the vehicle.

The vehicle erupted into flames after breaching the synagogue’s front entrance, prompting a massive emergency response. Law enforcement searched the building and the burned vehicle for potential explosives while nearby Jewish organizations and schools went into lockdown as a precaution. Michigan State Police announced they had increased patrols at other places of worship amid the heightened alert.

The situation has sparked renewed conversations about security within Jewish communities in Palm Beach County.

In Boca Raton, police reaffirmed their commitment to strong security coordination with local houses of worship, telling CBS12 News on Thursday:

Our local synagogues continue to be a high priority for our patrols.”

The West Palm Beach Police Department also responded to CBS12 News’ inquiry, adding:

We do not comment on specific security measures or protocols.”

The Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Office also said that it is aware of the attack at the Michigan synagogue and we extend our thoughts and support to any victims and their families.

We continuously monitor active threats across the nation that could impact our local community. In light of today’s events, our deputies have increased patrols at local places of worship as a precautionary measure. Many places of worship also hire extra-duty deputies for added security during services, which we encourage. At this time, there is no known specific threat to our community. We ask all residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity immediately.

Federal investigators, including the FBI, continue to examine evidence, analyze surveillance footage, and work to determine a motive in Michigan. Authorities caution that the investigation remains in its early stages.
