TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – A powerful cold front will bring strong storms and BIG changes to the area this week. Here is a detailed breakdown of the severe risk and First Alert Weather Day.
Storms arrive this morning and last through midday. Wind damage or power outages will be possible with the strongest storms. Also, impacts to your morning commute can be expected.(WCTV)First Alert Weather Day for Monday storms
Rain and storms have been ongoing across the Big Bend and South Georgia this morning. These have been sub-severe so far.
Rain and storms will continue to develop ahead of the main line. While most of these storms will not be severe, there may be one or two stronger storms which will bring a risk of heavy rain, lightning, gusty winds and an isolated tornado.
I expect a main line of storms to approach your morning commute. The strong to severe line will bring a few threats with it.
Scattered damaging wind gusts between 50 and 70 mphA few brief tornadoes, one or two strongQuarter-size hail with some stormsHeavy downpours, rain totals under 0.50″
Storms will start as early as 5 a.m. and should exit the Suwannee River valley by 12 or 1 p.m.
Storms will reach the western Big Bend between 5 and 8 AM, the heart of the Big Bend and South Georgia between 7 and 10 AM and the eastern areas between 9 AM and 1 PM.(WCTV)
The Storm Prediction Center keeps all of the area under a level 2, slight risk for the majority of the area. An enhanced risk, level 3, is in place along and east of I-75.
Have multiple ways to receive weather alerts this morning and be sure to check the radar before heading out the door.
A level 2 risk for strong to severe storms for most of the area. This means a few storms may reach severe limits this morning, which are wind 58 mph or greater, hail quarter-sized or bigger and a few tornadoes.(WCTV)Cooler Monday afternoon
Non-thunderstorm winds will ramp up around the front, then turn breezy northwest behind it as much cooler, drier air rushes in. Winds between 15 and 25 mph will blow around loose items or patio furniture.
The cool north wind will drop temperatures from the 70s and 60s on Monday morning to the 50s by the afternoon. It will feel chilly for much of the afternoon as the sun breaks through the clouds.
Hazardous marine and beach conditions on Monday, with advisory-level winds and seas expected and gale-force gusts possible.
Frost/freeze concerns early next week
Colder air settles in on Monday night and Tuesday night. I would expect a late-season frost/freeze for those who have planted early and farmers. Temperatures in the low 30s to mid 30s. A hard freeze warning is in effect due to the quick cold snap.
Warming up by midweek
Temperatures start to moderate back to our typical March weather in the 70s and 80s by the weekend. Rain chances at zero for the rest of the week, which is not great news for the ongoing drought.
