Ripley’s Crazy Golf Orlando is now open to the public at Icon Park on International Drive. One of the centerpiece props is a golden toilet, and that’s not even the wackiest part of the experience.

The balls keep score for you.

It’s a RFID chip thing. “When your ball sinks in the LED cup at the end of the hole, your score will automatically appear on the scoreboard TV above,” the Crazy Golf monitors explain.

No more tiny little pencils – or fudging those tallies. Granted, I haven’t run in mini-golf circles in a while, but this seems like an innovation.

But that might not be the most memorable part of the attraction, which features 27 holes in an indoor course sprinkled with day-glo decor and nontraditional putting challenges you’d probably expect from a “believe it or not” vendor.

There are holes based on pinball games, vending machines, air hockey, Simon Says and beer pong, though Ripley calls that one Trick Shot. There is a hole where players use an elevated, swinging hammer to hit the ball and another one (“The Slapper”) where a giant hand moves along the action.

“You can really get your frustrations out on that hole,” says Chris Reyna, general manager of Ripley’s attractions in Orlando.

A popular spot with previewers was a hole that uses a loop-the-loop track to fling the ball toward the hole.

Those are all achieved without the use of a putter. There are more traditional holes, though mostly wackily themed. Which brings us to the golden toilet, a sort of in-house shout-out to the real-life 18-karat (and functional) gold toilet the company purchased at auction last year for $12.1 million. (For the record, they both make flushing noises.)

Also unusual are a spinning obstacle, sort of a modern-day windmill distraction, and a hole featuring pigeons that are foosball men.

“I grew up in the 90s, early 2000s and I remember going to miniature golf as a kid, and they had movement on the courses that you don’t really see anymore. So I had to have a windmill here,” Reyna said.

“And it’s one of the hardest ones on the course, so I kind of regret it at this point,” he laughed.

There are characters such as a mustachioed frog named Sir Hops-a-Lot and one called Chubby Chip. Bizarre faces and eyeballs loom from the ceiling. They sell cocktails and mocktails, including Dragon Berry on the Fairway and the Water Hazard ‘Rita. There’s also one called The Dave. (Note the cupholders at each green.) Specialty popcorn is for sale.

Each hole has flashing barriers down the sides, and it’s all surrounded by glow-in-dark figures and video screens as music blares. I wouldn’t call it soothing, but it’s sure interesting.

“It’s kind of pop art and rave scene, almost,” Reyna said. “I think it’s going to be very popular in November with all the EDC folks that are in.”

Ripley’s Crazy Golf, which opens daily at 11 a.m., has a corner position at Icon Park, next door to the Museum of Illusions. The space previously was home to Max Action and a drug store. This is the second Crazy Golf location operated by Orlando-based Ripley Entertainment, following on the heels of an 18-hole version in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Pricing for the Orlando course is $24.99 ($19.99 for ages 3-11). There are 9- and 18-hole prices available at the attraction. It takes 45 minutes to an hour to play the full 27 holes.

Ripley also offers a combo ticket that includes the golf plus the nearby Ripley’s Believe It or Not museum (the sinkhole building) and the adjacent Ripley Mirror Maze attraction. There’s a small overlap between the courses as far as similar holes go.

One last bit of weirdness. For a limited time, folks who donate locks of their hair to the record-setting hairball near the entrance get 25% off the price of a combo ticket.
