Gas prices are rising across Miami-Dade County, but Key Biscayne drivers are feeling the increase more sharply than most.

While the average price of a gallon of regular gasoline in Miami rose 25.2 cents last week, prices at Key Biscayne’s two gas stations jumped by nearly 50 cents per gallon over the same period.

The average price of gas across Miami-Dade now stands at $3.74 per gallon to start mid-March.

That marks a steep climb from recent weeks. Prices in the Miami metropolitan area are up 87.8 cents per gallon compared to a month ago and 71.1 cents higher than this time last year.

The gap between mainland and island prices remains significant.

According to GasBuddy, the cheapest station in Miami was priced at $2.97 per gallon last Sunday. In contrast, Key Biscayne ranked as the most expensive location in the area at $4.99 per gallon — a difference of $2.02 per gallon.

Nationally, gas prices are also on the rise. The average price of gasoline increased 23.2 cents per gallon in the past week, reaching $3.68 per gallon.

“Consumers continue to feel the sting of rising oil, gasoline, and diesel costs as geopolitical tensions in the Middle East remain elevated, pushing gasoline prices to their highest levels in years while diesel could soon approach the $5-per-gallon mark nationally,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy.

“Until we see a meaningful resumption of oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz, upward pressure on fuel prices is likely to persist. At the same time, seasonal forces are beginning to intensify as several regions complete the transition to summer gasoline, creating a double headwind that could continue driving pump prices higher in the weeks ahead.”
