A man was shot and killed by police at a Jacksonville gas station during an armed standoff after a reported robbery.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A man was shot and killed by police late Tuesday morning after an armed standoff at a Gate gas station on Bowden Road that began as a reported robbery, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said.
In a briefing, JSO Undersheriff Shawn Coarsey said officers were dispatched around 9:22 a.m. to a report of an armed robbery involving a middle-aged white man. Investigators said three employees were inside the store at the time.
According to police, the man walked around the store for several minutes and once customers left the business, the man pulled a handgun from his waistline and began making threats toward the employees and himself.
He then ordered the employees out of the store and told them to call police, while warning that he would come out shooting.
When officers responded, the man continued making threats and told them he would exit the store firing. He raised his handgun and began approaching officers.
Undersheriff Coarsey said an officer ultimately shot the man with a rifle.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
“We’re not going to let him fire a gun [at our officers],” said Sheriff TK Waters
Undersheriff Coarsey said the incident appears to be a case of “suicide by cop.”
No officers or civilians were injured, and officials said there is no ongoing threat to the public.
Police also noted that glass at the business was damaged during the confrontation and it is unknown how this will affect the gas station’s operations.
The State Attorney’s Office is conducting an independent investigation into the incident.
This shooting marks as JSO’s 6th officer-involved shooting of 2025. Four have been fatal.
This is a developing situation. We will update this article with more information as it comes in.
