The Hillsdale College softball team got a solid result on Tuesday as part of its annual spring break trip to Florida, taking a game off defending national runner-up Tampa to split a competitive doubleheader.
After falling 6-0 to the powerhouse Spartans in the first contest, Hillsdale pulled out a thrilling pitcher’s duel in the nightcap, taking a 1-0 victory to end the day victors. Senior Mackenzi Maxson was the star for the Chargers in the second game, throwing an absolute gem to become just the second pitcher this season to shut out Tampa in a contest.
Maxson kept the Spartans off-balance for the entire contest, throwing a two-hitter with three strikeouts and allowing just four baserunners across seven innings to pick up her second win of the season. Tampa didn’t get a hit against Maxson until the fifth inning and never advanced a runner past first base in the contest. Hillsdale supported Maxson well with error-free defense.
Maxson’s success meant Hillsdale just needed one breakthrough moment to secure the victory, and that moment came in the top of the third inning. Sydney Davis drew a two out walk for the Chargers, and Nathalie Hagle drove her in with a double to right center to score the game’s lone and winning run.
Hagle was 2 for 3 at the plate to lead the Chargers offensively in the win, and Maggie Olaveson and Emma Sather each added a single as well.
Hillsdale fell 6-0 in the first game, as the Chargers offense was stymied by Tampa All-American pitcher Gwen McGinnis, who held the Chargers to just three hits. Davis had a double to lead the Chargers offensively, and Ronnie Craft and Sather each added a hit as well.
Grace Harris (4-3) took the loss for the Chargers, pitching three innings, and Katie Jonas pitched three innings of relief with three strikeouts and two walks as well.
Hillsdale is now 10-9 on the season, with a win over both the defending national champion, University of Texas-Tyler, and the defending national runner-up in the Spartans on its resume. The Chargers will be back in action tomorrow in Lakeland, Florida, taking on host Florida Southern University in a night doubleheader starting at 5 p.m.
