Rumors have been flying that it’s possible that underground tunnels could be added to Universal Orlando in the near future.

Epic Universe

These tunnels would help connect guests from Universal CityWalk, Islands of Adventure, and Universal Studios to Epic Universe, which are about 5 miles apart from each other. However, whether or not these tunnels will actually be built has remained to be seen, but there’s a new promising update you’ve got to know about.

According to the Orlando Business Journal, contract negotiations are currently underway with the district that oversees Universal and Elon Musk’s The Boring Co. to get things moving on building these potential tunnels. The tunnels would be a new form of transportation to move guests around. It would eliminate car traffic, potentially greatly reducing the amount of travel time between these sections of the resort.

Back in February, The Boring Co. was selected as the preferred bidder on the project by the Shingle Creek Transit & Utility Community Development District. While the company’s proposal noted the loop is designed with future expansion in mind, it did not include a map to show what it may look like for Orlando. A rival bidder, however, Sunshine Connection Partners, did include a map that could give us insight into how this project may look.

With this proposed expansion, if The Boring Co. were to do something similar, we could see stops at:

Rosen Centre Hotel
Hilton Orlando
Hyatt Regency
Orange County Convention Center’s North-South Building
Orange County Convention Center’s West-Building

Previously, Joshua Wallack, owner of Mango’s Tropical Cafe on International Drive, said that, “Boring is looking at the whole I-Drive district, basically having the Orange County Convention Center to Epic Universe on a [loop].” However, Maria Triscari, the president and CEO of The International Drive Resort Area Chamber of Commerce, has said that she’s “not been involved in the ongoing discussions between the district and Boring” and has not been part of discussions between the two parties about expanding the potential tunnels along the tourism corridor.

Universal Orlando

District Manager Jennifer Walden has said officials are working with local stakeholders on this transportation system project, saying that at this current stage, they are “exploring operational and financial feasibility, including close collaboration with local stakeholders.” Therefore, it sounds like this project is moving along well, but the possible expansions are up in the air.
