Challenger Middle School has something to celebrate, and the entire Lee County Schools community is celebrating right along with them. The school has earned statewide recognition as a 2026 Exceeding Expectations Award School, an honor presented by the East Coast Technical Assistance Center (ECTAC). ECTAC is a membership network of Florida school district leaders dedicated to student success and continuous school improvement. Challenger is one of just 31 schools across the entire state of Florida to receive this prestigious distinction.
The recognition is based on 2025 Florida School Grade data and reflects exceptional performance across rigorous criteria: maintaining an “A” or “B” school grade, achieving above the 50th percentile in both Academic Achievement and Learning Gains, demonstrating year-over-year growth in total school grade points, and serving a student population that meets the state’s poverty threshold of 68.8%. With more than 3,400 schools across Florida eligible for consideration, earning a spot among just 31 Award Schools is a remarkable testament to what the Challenger community has built.
What makes this recognition especially meaningful is what it represents: real students making real progress. The Exceeding Expectations Award is not handed out for a single strong year or a lucky data point. It reflects a culture of growth, a commitment to doing the right work, and a school community that refuses to settle for anything less than the best for its students.
Principal Christopher Drake said the honor is a true reflection of what happens when an entire school community shows up for students every single day.
“I am incredibly proud of our Challenger Chargers! Receiving this honor is a reflection of the collective heartbeat of our school, from our hardworking teachers and staff to our dedicated families and, most importantly, our resilient students. This award belongs to every individual who walks these halls and gives their best every single day.”
The recognition comes with an exciting opportunity as well. Challenger Middle has been invited to present at the annual ECTAC Exceeding Expectations Conference, scheduled June 10-12, 2026, at the Renaissance Orlando at Sea World. There, the Challenger team will take the stage alongside Award Schools from across Florida to share the strategies and best practices driving their continued growth in student achievement. It is a well-deserved moment in the spotlight for a school that has put in the work.
“Our team works toward getting 1% better every day for our kids, and I believe this recognition highlights that we are doing the right work,” Drake added.
The Challenger Chargers have proven that when a school community is united around a common goal, extraordinary things happen. This award reflects that collective effort and is a reminder of the incredible work taking place every day inside Lee County Schools. Go Chargers!
