Leon County Virtual School may not close after all, school board still debating consolidation

  • March 19, 2026

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Leon County Virtual School might be spared from budget cuts.

If you’re a Leon County Schools parent whose child attends and elementary through high school, you’ve likely heard about some of the turmoil when it comes to budget cuts and consolidation.

“Leon County Virtual School, I believe, has been pulled from the list of cuts,” School Board Member Alva Smith said. “So, I think there is enough reconsideration of how much money was actually going to save.”

Smith explained that if Leon County’s virtual school did close, those kids were unlikely to go to a physical school, but would instead transfer to a private online school.

Smith believes LCS does need to consider consolidating schools, given the explosion of school choice. School choice doesn’t just mean religious or public anymore, but now includes charter and even transferring to another school inside LCS, Smith explained.

She said that if they don’t come up with a plan, budget cuts will thrust one upon them.

“They did a good job of explaining to us their situation and really encouraging the district to support that program and look and see if we can’t expand it, just give it one more chance to see if we can’t expand and see if we can grow that program,” Smith said.

Smith said Leon County Virtual School might be given one of two more years to bolster its full time enrollment numbers, but she believes a similar analysis will need to happen districtwide.

More information will likely come from the Leon County School Board Workshop next week.
