Florida man doing 101 mph in a 55-mph zone was trying to ‘avoid an animal,’ deputies say

GENEVA, Fla. – An alleged superspeeder claims he had to speed to avoid an animal in the road, the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office said.

Around 1 a.m. Wednesday, deputies saw a dark four-door sedan cross the bridge over the St. Johns River at an “excessively high rate of speed” near State Road 46 and W. Osceola Road in Geneva, according to an arrest report.

Gregory Dolcine, 32, was pulled over for driving 101 mph in a 55-mph zone. Dolcine then told the deputy he was “speeding to avoid an animal in the roadway,” the arrest report states.

Dolcine was arrested for dangerous, excessive speeding, over 100 miles per hour.

He received a $500 bond, which he has posted.

Last year, a new law (HB 351) went into effect, which establishes “dangerous excessive speeding” as a criminal offense in Florida.

It refers to situations where drivers:

Go at least 50 mph over the speed limit

Speed at 100 mph or more in a way that threatens the people or property around them
