The first two installments of Major League Baseball’s Spring Breakout games showcased some key future contributors for the Mets.
It was Nolan McLean who earned the win for the Mets in the inaugural event back in 2024. Last year, the action in West Palm Beach provided a first look at Carson Benge and Jonah Tong.

On Thursday night in Port St. Lucie, the Mets prospects could not keep their unbeaten run going, dropping a 2-0 result to the Rays at Clover Park. Despite being shut out, a low-scoring game meant that pitching reigned supreme. And there were a few encouraging signs within the Mets’ lineup, as well.
With the Mets’ future on display, here are four prospects who stood out in the annual futures event:
Jack Wenninger
New York Mets pitcher Jack Wenninger (92) pitches in the fifth inning against the Houston Astros on March 1, 2026, at Clover Park.
Position: Right-handed pitcher
The towering 24-year-old right-hander has stormed up the Mets’ prospect rankings, making a leap from No. 29 to No. 7 to begin the 2026 season. He proved why as he drew the start on Thursday night.

Wenninger opened the game by striking out the side in the top of the first inning on three different pitches. He dialed up his fastball to 97 mph, showed off his splitter and sprinkled in two variations of a slider. He finished the outing with six strikeouts and one earned run allowed on two hits and one walk in 3â…” innings.
A season ago, he was 12-6 with a 2.92 ERA and 147 strikeouts in 135â…” innings in Double A Binghamton.

Elian Peña
Position: Shortstop
One of the most encouraging signs for the Mets in the Spring Breakout game was that the 18-year-old Peña was up to the task of facing some of the top arms from the Rays system.
Peña, who is one year removed from signing a $5 million international deal out of the Dominican Republic, did not look overmatched in the second spot in the lineup and playing shortstop. He tagged a single to right field off Rays No. 17 prospect Jose Urbina and later drew a walk.
Peña, the Mets’ No. 9 prospect, has yet to make his professional debut after spending the 2025 season in the Dominican Summer League where he posted a .949 OPS with nine home runs, 33 RBI, 47 runs and 21 stolen bases in 55 games.
Jonathan Santucci
New York Mets pitcher Jonathan Santucci(12) throws a pitch during spring training workouts on Feb. 18, 2026, at Clover Park.
Position: Left-handed pitcher
The Mets’ 22-year-old southpaw starter prospect came on in the fourth inning and helped the Mets stay in the game. Relying almost completely on his fastball and slider, Santucci struck out five Rays batters and allowed one unearned run on one hit and two walks in 3â…” innings.
By the end of the 2025 season, Santucci, the club’s second-round pick in 2024, made the leap to Double A Binghamton where he was 4-0 with a 2.52 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 63 strikeouts in 50 innings. The team’s No. 10 prospect proved how nasty those two pitches can be as he stills works to hone in on a changeup that could be vital to his development.
Randy Guzman
Position: First baseman/outfielder
The 20-year-old Guzman was a sneaky inclusion at the bottom of the Mets order as the team’s designated hitter and showcased why his power is his top tool in his arsenal.
The right-handed hitting Guzman, who checks in as the Mets’ No. 27 prospect on the latest MLB pipeline, did not hit a ball under 92 mph on the evening. He collected a pair of hits — a 100.4 mph double over the head of the right fielder and a 92 mph single up the middle — to finish 2-for-4.
The Dominican Republic native posted a .985 OPS with three home runs, 13 doubles and 24 RBI in 26 games after being called up to Class A St. Lucie last season.
