Armed school guardians are meant to be an extra layer of security to protect your kids in school. The program was created in Broward County after the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland.
The armed guardians are well trained, and they are willing to put their lives on the line to protect your kids.
Officer Robert Ung, who had 30-plus years in law enforcement, is one of 74-armed school guardians across Broward County.
Ung not only greets everyone in the morning, but he is also the extra eyes and ears at Mary M. Bethune Elementary School in Hollywood working to make sure everyone is safe.
Ung was asked why he decided to become an armed guardian.
“It was a calling from God, he put it on my heart,” he said.
He’s been an armed school guardian for three years and has a good relationship with parents, teachers and staff.
“I think this is more rewarding to be honest with you,” he said. “The kids, you have an impact on them. You try to help them and show them the right things in life.”
NBC6’s Jawan Strader goes through the same training officers undergo in Broward’s armed school guardian program.
Parents like Nia Jones believe her daughter is safer because of the extra layer of security.
“One hundred percent, because you never know. And then he’s ready, he’s ready. He’s willing and ready. That’s necessary. I feel like it’s not a want anymore, it’s a need,” Jones said.
Principal Latosha Williams said Ung is more than an armed guardian to the kids at school.
“Some of them call him grandpa, some of them call him Officer Ung. They absolutely love him,” Williams said.
The school guardians must become certified and complete training. The Broward Schools Police partners with Kaiser University that uses a MILO machine or simulation for training.
“You’re in the environment, there’s noise, there’s screaming, there’s people that are moving in the video frame,” said Broward County Schools Police Chief Kevin Nosowicz.
The first question that applicants are asked when applying to become a school guardian is if they are willing to put their life on the line to protect your kids.
“I wouldn’t hesitate, not one bit,” said Ung.
