A man fleeing from police in Broward County on Sunday night crashed into a canal during the pursuit, and the woman who was his passenger was killed, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said.
It is the third pursuit to involve a deadly crash within the past month in Broward County.
The chain of events began shortly before 7:30 p.m. Sunday, when a BSO deputy saw a white GMC van driving recklessly in the 4000 block of Southwest 33rd Avenue in West Park, according to a BSO news release issued Monday afternoon. The van had been stolen from Miami-Dade County, according to the news release that did not specify when.
The deputy turned on his lights to pull over the driver, identified as Michael Malik Harvey, but Harvey did not stop, the Sheriff’s Office said. Harvey allegedly hit the deputy’s marked patrol car as he fled the area.
The deputy did not pursue Harvey at that point but remained at the scene of the crash, the Sheriff’s Office said.
A Pembroke Park Police officer later saw the van driving east on West Hallandale Beach Boulevard, just west of Interstate 95. Harvey later reached the area of Oakwood Plaza, near Dania Pointe, where he “intentionally turned the stolen vehicle toward the marked police vehicle, forcing the officer to take evasive action to avoid being struck,” BSO said in the news release.
“A multi-agency pursuit” began for a charge of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, the news release said. The Sheriff’s Office did not specify which agencies participated in the chase or what route it took.
Broward Sheriff’s Office policy allows deputies to pursue when a forcibly felony has been committed.
Harvey drove into an RV park in the 2300 block of State Road 84 in Fort Lauderdale, where he crashed through a closed metal gate while driving in the wrong direction and drove into a canal, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Deputies, fire rescue crews and divers responded to the crash. Harvey was rescued from the water and taken to a hospital. He is expected to recover.
His passenger was rescued and taken to the hospital, where she was later pronounced dead, the Sheriff’s Office said. She had not been identified as of late Monday afternoon.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the “in-custody death” while BSO detectives are investigating the original incident that began in West Park, as well as the woman’s death.
Harvey is facing charges of felony murder, aggravated fleeing and eluding causing death, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, grand theft of a motor vehicle and leaving the scene of a crash involving an occupied vehicle.
Harvey had not been booked into the jail as of Monday. Court records were not available.
Sunday’s deadly crash comes within a month of two others that occurred during pursuits in Broward County.
Ronald Wilson, 74, was killed while driving in Tamarac on Feb. 16 when a BSO deputy crashed into his truck, a probable cause affidavit said. The deputy was pursuing the driver of a stolen car who allegedly committed aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer by intentionally hitting another deputy’s marked patrol car. The driver, Sean Paul Holder, was arrested and is facing a charge of murder by another while engaged in a specific felony, among others.
Ten days later, Bonnie Bouffard, 74, was killed on Florida’s Turnpike near Sunrise Boulevard in a crash that occurred during a pursuit that involved Florida Highway Patrol and BSO.
Deputies began pursuing the driver of a stolen car that afternoon after the driver intentionally hit multiple marked police cars while officers were inside them, a probable cause affidavit said. An FHP trooper performed a PIT maneuver against the stolen truck, which caused it to crash into the shoulder wall of the highway before then crashing with Bouffard’s black Nissan Altima, a probable cause affidavit said. The driver, Anna Giza, is facing a murder charge, among others.
