TAMPA, Fla. (CBS12) — An undercover investigation into a synthetic drug operation has led to arrests and the seizure of a substance authorities say is 13 times more potent than morphine.
The investigation began with an anonymous tip on Jan. 28, 2026, and led Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office deputies to go undercover, where they purchased products containing 7-hydroxymitragynine and substances that later tested positive for synthetic cannabinoids, authorities said.
According to deputies, 7-hydroxymitragynine is a powerful opioid-like compound derived from kratom. Florida classified it as a controlled substance in August 2025, making it illegal to possess or distribute. Authorities say the substance is estimated to be about 13 times more potent than morphine, raising concerns about its potential for abuse and overdose.

Three suspects were arrested: Mohammad Al Youssef, 22; Samantha Gerts, 19; and Abdallah Abdel-Kader III, 21. All are facing multiple charges related to the незаконный sale and possession of controlled substances, deputies said.
