Floridian Feel

People often think of Gothic architecture as heavy, dark and foreboding, like the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland.

“This house is truly Gothic but it’s also light and bright,” Gonzalez said. “The whitewashed walls and the light marble floors help this house fit into Florida, but you also see homes like this in Spain, Italy, Mexico and Colombia.”

A loggia with a vaulted ceiling and stone details combines the Gothic style with a row of windows framing views of palm trees and the bright blue water of the bay.

Lush landscaping around the house, which softens the dramatic stone exterior, was designed by Fernando Wong, while custom-designed metal fencing throughout the property was created by Belt Designs. Vines dangle off the stone walls and wrap stone staircases that link the terraces, while palm trees and other greenery provide shade and seclusion.

In addition to the whimsical giant chess board, the grounds include a keystone-edged infinity pool, terraces, a rooftop sundeck and a cement dock.

“My favorite part of the house is the roof terrace, which is the perfect place to meditate, relax and recoup your energy,” Alatriste said.

The property, which sits on a one-fourth acre site, also includes separate living quarters from the main house and a 3,000-square-foot unfinished basement.

“It can be a challenge to sell a one-of-a-kind house, but people want character in their homes now,” Alatriste said.
