CAPE CORAL, Fla. (WINK) — The City of Cape Coral is moving forward with its citywide canal dredging program to maintain more than 400 miles of canals and protect waterway health and safety.

A new citywide permit is required after the previous permit ended in 2023, according to a press release. The process involves detailed state and federal reviews and can take time.

Some areas, including Redfish Point, Matlacha Isles and Unit 44–64, are being handled through separate permits to help move the overall project forward. The Redfish Point permit has been approved, and dredging at Redfish Point began in January 2026.

Surveys are underway to prioritize canals based on need and boat traffic. Future dredging will move forward in phases once permits and funding are secured.

The work supports safer boating, improved stormwater management and healthier waterways for the community.
