PALM CITY, Fla. (CBS12 ) — A dramatic rescue in Palm City may have saved the life of a bald eagle after the injured bird ended up in a canal known to have large alligators, according to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office.
The sheriff’s office said the call came from a resident in the Stuart West/Cobblestone community, who reported that a large bald eagle had crash-landed in a yard. When the bird tried to take off again, deputies said it instead wound up in a nearby canal.
According to MCSO, Corporal William Weiss and Animal Services Officer Shannon McGee went into the water after the eagle as it struggled and began moving farther from shore. The two were able to safely secure the bird and bring it back to land.
The sheriff’s office also credited the resident for calling right away, saying the quick report played a critical role in the rescue.
