TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Tallahassee Southside is getting more colorful thanks to new murals being funded in part by the city’s tax dollars.
In a partnership between Knight Creative Communities Initiative (KCCI), City of Tallahassee Frenchtown/Southside Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) and SoMo Walls, 8 large-scale murals are being set up along the South Monroe Street corridor, per a press release.
The murals are being painted on shipping containers in the SoMo Walls parking lot.
On Wednesday, KCCI announced that seven artists are completing the murals with $30,000 in taxpayer funds. This comes after a dismissed ethics complaint and selection process.
Painting is set to be underway as soon as this Saturday.
According to a press release, each of the murals is expected to reflect a “unique story” and themes of statehood, civic identity, Florida nature and others.

During the announcement, artists shared their sketches, talked about their themes and celebrated what will be a large art installation just south of our state capitol building.
One of the Tallahassee artists, Matthew Forest, who goes by the name britseo, said that it’s a special installation.
”We have a mix, but I think that there’s something special to the local (art) scene in Tallahassee that gives it its own personality and flavor, not that you won’t find anywhere else,” Britseo said.
Each of the murals was chosen by an independent selection committee, and each theme relates, in some way, to Tallahassee.
