We’re in the midst of one of the busiest travel seasons of the year, and airports are doing their best to prepare passengers and prepare FOR passengers.

The Tampa International Airport (TPA) has made some major changes ahead of Spring Break season to make crowds move more smoothly and make your travel experience as straightforward as possible. But that means there are some NEW rules you need to follow.

Check Your Security Wait Times

First, TPA shares that, “For the first time ever, travelers will be able to view live security checkpoint wait times on digital displays located in the Main Terminal’s Shuttle Lobby at Airside A.” The system is powered by advanced LiDAR technology and tracks passenger movements to give live updates.

Trying to decide if you should go ahead and get in line for security? It’s a good idea to check wait times before you make your decision. You don’t want to dilly-dally if the lines are long!

What Disney Adults Should Know Before Going Through Airport Security
Be Ready for a Face Scan

At TPA, TSA PreCheck now offers Touchless ID lanes. These are optional, and they use facial comparison technology for “faster, contactless identity verification.” It will be available to passengers flying American, Alaska, Delta, Southwest, and United Airlines.

Images are deleted within 24 hours of flight departure. But don’t worry, if you’re uncomfortable with this offering, you can opt out by going through the standard TSA Precheck line.

Why Your TSA Airport Strategy Needs to Change Right Now
Don’t Forget Your Real ID

While we’re on the subject of security screenings, don’t forget your Real ID! If you don’t already have one, you’ll need to secure one before you travel. The Tampa International Airport website notes the following:

“As of May 7, 2025, state-issued driver’s licenses and IDs that are not REAL ID compliant are no longer accepted as valid forms of identification at airports.”

If you don’t have a Real ID, you should travel with an acceptable alternative form of ID, like a passport. As of February 1st, 2026, those without the required acceptable form of ID will have the option to pay a $45 fee to use TSA ConfirmID. TSA will then attempt to verify your identity so you can start the airport screening process. If this is the route you plan to take, budget extra time for security.
