Jacksonville firefighter, 23, killed in Putnam County crash – Action News Jax

The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department confirmed that one of its own died in a car crash on Wednesday.

The Jacksonville Firefighters Death Benefit Fund, Inc. first posted about Rescue Engineer Colton R. Tibbetts, 23, death around 2:40 p.m.

The crash that killed Tibbetts happened Wednesday morning in Putnam County.

The Florida Highway Patrol said it was a single-car crash and the driver lost control of the car and hit a sign and several trees.

The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department said in a social media post, just before 4:30 p.m., that Tibbetts had recently been promoted in November, saying it was “a reflection of his commitment, work ethic, and the firefighter he was becoming.”

JFRD also said that Tibbetts “served our community with pride.”

Tibbetts followed in the footsteps of his father, recently retired Lieutenant Brian Tibbetts, and the Jacksonville Firefighters Death Benefit Fund, Inc. said Tibbetts came from a family of firefighters.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office sent its condolences to JFRD in a social post, saying in part:

The fire rescue department has confirmed that 23-year-old Colton Tibbetts died in a crash in Putnam County early this morning, and it happened at the intersection of State Road 26 and 21. Action News Jack’s Madison Foglio is live at the JFRD headquarters in Madison. The fire rescue says that he was a beloved son, a brother, a friend, and a dedicated firefighter. And Tanika, he was just recently promoted in the last few months to rescue engineer. Now if we can take a look on your screen right now, this is the post by JFRD that they put out in the last few minutes or so, the most recent picture of Colton Tibbets here. Another post gives us more of an insight into who Tibbetts was. This is posted by the Jacksonville Firefighters Death Benefit Fund. It says Tibbets was hired by JFRD in 2022. And as I mentioned, recently promoted to rescue engineer last November, and he is the son of a recently retired lieutenant named Brian Tibbetts. Now neither of these posts say that where Tibbetts crashed, but earlier this morning, Action News Jack reported about a deadly single vehicle crash in Putnam County where Florida Highway Patrol told us a 23-year-old was killed in that crash. AFRD confirmed with me in the last 20 minutes that Tibbets’ crash was also in Putnam County this morning. Now I reached out to Jacksonville firefighters, the local union here, but the president was not able to speak with me at this time.
