Let’s be honest. At some point in your life, you have stood in the background of a photo you were not invited to be in, smiled like you belonged there, and walked away feeling oddly proud of yourself. Well, it is time to get paid for that exact skill set.

Frontrunner Casting is currently looking for paid background actors in the St. Petersburg area for The Statement, a darkly comic drama directed by Tom McCarthy, the Oscar-winning director of Spotlight. The film is set at a Florida beach town in 1980, when the global conversation about climate change was just beginning. Which means this movie is both historically fascinating and deeply, crushingly relevant to everything happening right now. Great timing, universe. Really nailed it.

The cast is, to put it plainly, an embarrassment of riches: Paul Rudd, Paul Giamatti, John Turturro, Amy Ryan, Evan Peters, Tatiana Maslany, and Jason Clarke. That is not a cast list. That is a threat. Someone looked at Hollywood and said “give us everyone good,” and Hollywood said, “Mkay.” The film follows twenty scientists, activists and policymakers who gather for a weekend conference with one mandate from Congress: write a statement about what to do about CO2 emissions. A room full of experts trying to agree on something important in 1980. We are sure that went smoothly.

In the book on which the film is based, the conference takes place at the historic Don CeSar on St. Pete Beach, and that is where filming is rumored to be taking place.

Tom McCarthy co-wrote the screenplay with Thomas Bidegan and Noé Debré, adapting Nathaniel Rich’s book Losing Earth. Sony Pictures Classics will distribute domestically, which means awards season conversation is already a reasonable expectation before a single frame has been shot.

Here is what you need to know if you want in: filming takes place April 6, 7, and 8 in the St. Petersburg area. Pay is $200 for 12 hours of work, plus $50 for a fitting. Since the film is set in 1980, men should be open to period grooming and haircuts. If you own a car from 1965 to 1979, mention that too, because production would love it. Moreover, they are exclusively looking for local hires.

To apply, email thestatement@frcasting.com with the subject line BG EXTRAS. Include a recent headshot, full body photo, contact info, sizes and measurements, available dates, and vehicle information if applicable.

This is a legitimate, paid opportunity to be part of a genuinely exciting film, shot right here at home. Do not sleep on it.
