With over 1,300 miles of coastline and a thousand freshwater springs, Florida is a state defined by its relationship with water. It’s no wonder we’re the place where real-life mermaids call home. From the kitschy “Old Florida” charm of Weeki Wachee Springs to modern poolside spectacles, mermaid shows have been enchanting locals since the 1940s.

As a Miami local, I’ve always been drawn to these over-the-top, nostalgic attractions. However, most of the “mermaid magic” is concentrated in Central Florida. That’s why The Wreck Bar in Fort Lauderdale is such a local treasure; it brings that iconic vintage fantasy right to the heart of South Florida. Whether you’re looking for a unique date night or a quirky family outing, this “capsized” lounge offers one of the most memorable experiences in the city.

A South Florida Tradition: The History of the Wreck Bar

The Wreck Bar isn’t just a bar; it’s a piece of living history. This is the only mermaid show in South Florida, operating in some capacity since 1956, when the property was known as the Yankee Clipper Hotel. Now, the B Ocean Resort has meticulously preserved its nautical roots.

While the show’s structure has evolved over the decades-including the famous (and occasionally paused) mermaid burlesque-the core magic remains. Even without the late-night “adults-only” performances, the current family-friendly show captures the whimsical, underwater elegance that made this spot a Fort Lauderdale institution.

What to Expect at the Wreck Bar Mermaid Show

The experience is truly one-of-a-kind. The evening starts at the entrance to the Wreck Bar, which is designed to look like a capsized ship. Large portholes reveal the hotel’s pool, which transforms into the mermaids’ stage every Thursday to Saturday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Before the performance begins, a mermaid often comes out for a meet-and-greet with guests-the perfect photo op! Once the music starts, a group of mermaids is introduced for a show lasting about an hour. They swim gracefully through the pool, peeping into the portholes and playing with different props. Somehow, they manage to always look elegant underwater, even as they swim upside down or twirl. Their antics are sure to make you laugh and provide a traditional Floridian form of entertainment that you quite literally can’t find anywhere else in the area.

Dining Under the Sea: Menu Highlights

Once you’re seated, you can order drinks and food to enjoy during the show. I recommend sticking with the nautical theme and ordering fresh seafood.

From the Raw Bar & Small Plates

Ahi Tuna Tartare & Fresh Oysters: A classic pairing for a lounge over the water.

Rock-Charred Octopus: Served with avocado and unique chorizo powder.

Signature Entrees

Lionfish Chowder: A Florida specialty that is as delicious as it is eco-friendly.

Crab Risotto: Rich, creamy, and perfect for a full dinner.

Steaks & More: For those who prefer “land” over “sea,” there are plenty of hearty options available.

Tips for Your Visit: Know Before You Go

To make sure your night under the sea goes swimmingly, here are a few things to keep in mind:

Make a Reservation: The Wreck Bar is intimate and fills up incredibly fast, especially on Friday and Saturday nights. Head to the B Ocean Resort website to snag a table in advance.

Arrive Early for the Best View: Seating is usually first-come, first-served within your reservation bracket. If you want a front-row seat to the portholes, try to get there 15–20 minutes before your time slot.

Parking: The resort offers valet parking, but there is also public metered parking nearby along Fort Lauderdale Beach if you prefer to walk.

Check the Age Requirements: While the main mermaid shows are family-friendly, always double-check the schedule for “Aquamen” or late-night burlesque shows, which are strictly 21+.

For me, The Wreck Bar represents a guaranteed good time. It is certainly one of Florida’s most unique eateries, and that’s simply unbeatable.
