CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. (Saturday) — Three people, including two young children, were killed in a violent crash on I-75 Friday evening, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Troopers say it happened just before 6 p.m. on northbound I-75 near mile marker 153.
Investigators say a driver traveling southbound at a high rate of speed veered off the roadway, crossed the median, and entered the northbound lanes, crashing into another vehicle.
The impact was so severe, troopers say the vehicle split into two pieces.
A 25-year-old man from North Fort Myers was pronounced dead at the scene.
Two children, ages 5 and 6, both from Fort Myers, were also killed. One died at the scene. The other was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital with critical injuries and later died.
The driver who crossed the median, a 28-year-old man from New York, suffered serious injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital.
Troopers say that vehicle overturned and came to rest on the shoulder.
The crash remains under investigation, and charges are pending.
