2,000 No Kings demonstrators chant and wave signs in Gulfport

Tens of thousands of people turned out Saturday for No Kings demonstrations across the country, as well as around the Tampa Bay region.

In the South Pinellas County beach city of Gulfport, about 2,000 people waved signs and chanted slogans spread out along several blocks of Gulfport Boulevard.

Alyssa is a protester who asked that her last name not be used. She said she was impressed by the turnout in the city of about 11,000 people. She got choked up when talking about the sign she carried.

“It says, ‘Can someone explain which crimes get you deported and which crimes get you elected president?’ We have a president who’s a 34-time elected felon who is convicted of sexually assaulting a woman, and somehow he’s allowed to rule our country and decide what laws are put over my body, what laws are put over other peoples’ bodies? It’s just not right,” Alyssa said

Other demonstrators held signs opposing the U.S.-led war on Iran or encouraging people to vote in November’s elections

Another Gulfport resident, Natasha Young, said, “I’m carrying a big blue sign that says, ‘Defend the Constitution’ because obviously the people in power have never read it.” She continued, “I’m also wearing a handmaidens’s outfit. There’s a book and a TV show that I highly recommend people to watch. They’re stripping women of their rights. They’re coming after women who are having miscarriages. My mother had more rights than I do at the moment. And now with the SAVE Act they’re actually coming for married women’s votes. So I’m very frustrated with the fact that women are not treated as equal. They’re coming after anyone who wants to promote love and inclusion and diversity. It’s time for people to stand up and say that that is not OK,” Young said.

When WMNF asked Young about the size of the demonstration as it was just getting underway, she said, “I think that it’s gonna get bigger. Gulfport is a very loving, accepting town, and that’s why I moved here. It has amazing qualities, and although that people say that Florida is a red state, people have love in their hearts, and it’s not about politics. It’s about accepting one another, even if you’re religious, love thy neighbor, love thy stranger. It’s all about accepting those as long as they don’t commit crimes against people, hurt people like the people in power, they don’t seem to care because they’re redacting statements and not getting to the bottom of actual crimes. Release the Epstein files,” Young said.

“My husband made this sign so that people understand that the lying needs to stop, and we need people need to understand that we are not going to let this continue. It goes with the redactions that the Justice Department made for our survivors who really just need to be stood and respected and have compassion and help,” Moseley said.

“I think [the size of the turnout] is great. Gulfport does not stop, and Gulfport will never stop, and this is something that I’m not surprised, quite frankly, about how big this is. Because Gulfport was not going to continue to take the other stuff. We weren’t going to continue to put up with the BS, quite frankly,” she said.

Other local No Kings demonstrations drew large crowds in St. Petersburg, Clearwater, Tampa, Sarasota and elsewhere.
