11-year-old girl struck while walking to bus stop in Port St. Lucie

WPBF 25. COVERING THE TREASURE COAST, AN 11 YEAR OLD GIRL STRUCK BY A VEHICLE WHILE SHE WAS CROSSING THE ROAD TO GET TO HER BUS STOP THIS MORNING. TREASURE COAST BUREAU REPORTER ANGELA ROZIER IS IN PORT SAINT LUCIE, WHERE PARENTS ARE SHOCKED TO SEE THIS HAPPEN IN THEIR NEIGHBORHOOD AND ARE CALLING FOR CHANGES TO BE MADE. WELL, PEOPLE IN THAT PORT SAINT LUCIE NEIGHBORHOOD ARE STILL TALKING ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED FRIDAY MORNING, AND THEY’RE PRAYING FOR THAT LITTLE GIRL AND HER FAMILY. I COULDN’T IMAGINE, I COULDN’T IMAGINE MY FOUR YEAR OLD GETTING HIT LIKE THAT. ANTHONY STUBBS WAS TAKING HIS FOUR YEAR OLD DAUGHTER TO SCHOOL WHEN HE DROVE PAST THE CRASH SCENE ON SOUTHWEST THORNHILL DRIVE. HIS WIFE SAYS HE CALLED HER IMMEDIATELY. HE WAS LIKE, ALMOST LIKE JUST COULDN’T SPEAK. AND WHEN HE TOLD ME, LIKE, I HAD TEARS COMING TO MY EYES, JUST IMAGINING IF IT WAS MY KID. A NEIGHBORHOOD CAMERA CAPTURED THE 11 YEAR OLD CROSSING THE STREET WHEN SHE WAS HIT. THE CHILD IS SEEN WAITING TO CROSS THE ROAD NEAR THE INTERSECTION OF SOUTHWEST THORNHILL DRIVE AND SOUTHWEST GEMINI LANE. JUST BEFORE THE CRASH, SHE IS SEEN WAITING FOR ANOTHER VEHICLE TO PASS BEFORE SHE TRIES TO CROSS THE STREET TO GET TO HER BUS STOP. AS SOON AS THE VEHICLE PASSES, THE CHILD UNFORTUNATELY DARTED INTO THE ROADWAY AND DID NOT SEE ONCOMING EASTBOUND TRAFFIC WHERE SHE WAS STRUCK. POLICE SAY THE DRIVER IMMEDIATELY STOPPED AFTER THE CRASH AND PROVIDED AID TO THE CHILD. THEY SAY SHE IS COOPERATING WITH THE INVESTIGATION AT THIS TIME. POLICE DO NOT BELIEVE SPEED WAS A FACTOR. STILL, RESIDENTS SAY THERE HAVE BEEN SPEEDING ISSUES ON THAT STREET IN THE PAST. IT’S LIKE A DRAG STRIP OUT HERE. THEY WOULD LIKE TO HAVE SPEED BUMPS AND THE BUS STOP LOCATION MOVED. THERE’S JUST SO MUCH TRAFFIC. I MEAN, ONE BLOCK OVER WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN AN INCONVENIENCE TO A BUS OR PARENTS TO AT LEAST BE IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD. I MEAN, WE KNOW THEY SPEED IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD, BUT YOU’RE A LITTLE MORE CONFINED SPACE. WELL, THE CHILD WAS TRANSPORTED BY AIR TO SAINT MARY’S MEDICAL CENTER IN WEST PALM BEACH WITH SERIOUS INJURIES.
