Authorities said a 27-year-old Orlando man stole 50 Disney trading pins valued at about $900 at Disney Springs.
The man was arrested for grand theft, which is a third-degree felony, and taken to jail following the March 2 incident. The State Attorney’s Office confirmed to WDWNT that no charges have been filed against him as of writing so we’re not naming him.
When we reached out to the man for comment to hear his side of the story, his mom said the man is mentally unwell and made a mistake.
Two eyewitnesses saw the man stealing at Disney World’s popular outdoor shopping and restaurant complex’s West Side.
A DisneyStyle store employee first noticed the man putting Disney trading pins inside his short’s front pocket, the Orange County Sheriff’s arrest report said.
The store employee warned managers who got Disney Security involved. By then, the accused thief visited the Starbucks bathroom and then went into the Star Wars Galactic Outpost shop.
A Disney Security officer who was on the alert saw the man put more trading pins in his shorts’ pocket and then walk out of the store.
After the man was confronted, authorities confiscated 50 different trading pins inside his backpack. The pins would have cost a Disney fan about $922 to purchase after tax, the arrest report said.Â
The man admitted he took the pins, the arrest report said.
Law enforcement has investigated several thefts in recent months, from the big to the small, like the Paddlefish scuba burglar who stole thousands of dollars in cash to a woman who grabbed a radio from Disney Security.Â
