CLAY COUNTY, Fla. – Clay County officials held a press conference on the logistics of the upcoming fair on Tuesday.

The Clay County Fair begins on Thursday, April 2, with gates opening at 2 p.m. It runs to April 12.

Sheriff Michelle Cook said traffic historically has been heavy, but officials expect smoother flow this year after months of planning. She cautioned that the fair property is served by a two-lane road and advised people to leave early, be patient and follow deputies’ directions on arrival and departure.

Drivers can tune to FM 88.5 for a recorded traffic update as they approach the fairgrounds. Organizers also urged visitors to download the SaferWatch app, which will be used for real-time alerts about traffic and other incidents.

Parking and on-site directions Fair staff, deputies and youth volunteers will direct parking to move vehicles quickly, officials said. Visitors should heed directions once on the property to speed entry and reduce congestion.

Safety and weather Clay County Emergency Management asked attendees to check the forecast before coming and to sign up for alerts at alert.claycountygov.com.

“It’s Florida in spring. Things change quickly,” Kayla Futch said, urging people to bring sunscreen, hats and sturdy shoes.

Officials recommended parents take a photo of their children before entering the fair so staff can quickly identify them if someone becomes separated in a crowd. Organizers said intercom announcements and digital alerts will instruct visitors if severe weather requires sheltering; people may use their cars for temporary shelter and reenter once conditions improve.

Clay County Fire Rescue Chief David Kuykendall said fire rescue teams will be on hand and stressed hydration and appropriate footwear. “We treat a lot of injuries from blisters,” he said, adding that sunscreen is especially important for children.

Officials said they are prepared for emergencies and any large disturbances as the fair begins. Parents dropping off teenagers were urged to discuss expected behavior and consequences ahead of time to help maintain a family-friendly atmosphere during the event, officials said.

Tickets are available at claycountyfair.org. Organizers encouraged attendees to follow the fair’s social channels and to download SaferWatch for timely updates.
