ENGLEWOOD, Fla. (WINK) — A domestic disturbance in a quiet Englewood neighborhood ended in a deadly deputy-involved shooting Wednesday, authorities said.

The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office says deputies responded to a home on Barker Avenue after receiving calls that a subject was armed and holding another person at gunpoint. Deputies were able to get other occupants out safely before attempting to negotiate with the armed individual.

When the person exited the home holding a gun and refused to comply with deputies’ orders to drop it, a deputy fired. First responders immediately attempted CPR, but the individual later died from their injuries, officials confirmed.

“This investigation is still very fresh,” Sheriff Bill Prummell said during a press conference. “We are still on scene, collecting evidence and statements, so details may change as we continue gathering information.”

Neighbors described the area as normally calm. “Englewood’s peaceful. Not a lot of crime going on here,” said Nazar Marchuk, who lives nearby. Chres Amo, who rides his bike through the neighborhood every day, added, “It’s just crazy.”

The scene remained active Wednesday evening, with crime scene tape, deputies, forensic units, and a mobile command center on site. Authorities are continuing to collect evidence and speak with witnesses.
