FORT PIERCE, Fla. (CBS12) — Newly released court records detail how a son accused of killing his parents was seen leaving their Harbour Isle condominium moments before police arrived, as he now faces two counts of first-degree murder with a firearm.

The Fort Pierce Police Department announced on Monday that Philip Repaci Jr., 56, has been formally charged in the February killings of his parents, Philip Repaci Sr., 85, and Joan Repaci, 80, who were found shot to death inside their Harbour Isle at Hutchinson Island condominium. The charges were filed more than a month after the initial investigation, while Repaci Jr. was already being held in the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office jail on local charges.

The charges stem from a welfare check conducted around 12:30 p.m. on Feb. 24 after family members reported they could not reach the couple and said the situation was unusual. Officers entering the residence found both victims dead in the living room, suffering from what police described as multiple gunshot wounds. Investigators have previously said the scene indicated a violent encounter, but stressed that the incident was isolated and posed no threat to the public.

According to a probable cause affidavit, an officer responding to the welfare check observed Repaci Jr. outside the condo as he arrived. Police said Repaci Jr. was seen walking toward a white Lexus SUV in the parking lot. As the officer approached the front door of the unit, Repaci Jr. got into the vehicle and drove away.

A maintenance worker performing an earlier welfare check also encountered Repaci Jr. at the unit, court records state. The worker reported that Repaci Jr. claimed to be the homeowner, appeared confrontational, gestured for him to leave, and exited the condo pushing a cart containing personal items before driving off.

Officers later entered the residence with permission and found the victims on the floor with blood around their heads. Investigators said Philip Repaci Sr. appeared to have suffered gunshot wounds to the head and chest, while Joan Repaci was found face down with fatal injuries.

Police said Repaci Jr. had been staying with his parents at the time of the killings and that there had been ongoing domestic issues within the household. Court records indicate relatives had raised concerns of escalating conflict and alleged elder abuse. Investigators said the victims were in the process of purchasing another home in an effort to separate from their son.

Neighbors reported hearing several loud bangs between about 11 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. on the day of the killings, sounds later described as possibly gunshots.

After Repaci Jr. left the condominium complex, Fort Pierce police issued a be-on-the-lookout alert for his vehicle. Indian River County sheriff’s deputies later located the white 2016 Lexus traveling north on U.S. 1. When deputies attempted a traffic stop, Repaci Jr. failed to pull over, according to authorities, leading deputies to perform a PIT maneuver and take him into custody. He was initially jailed on a fleeing and eluding charge.

Detectives later attempted to interview Repaci Jr., but he declined to speak, police said.

Search warrants executed at the condo and on Repaci Jr.’s vehicle uncovered multiple pieces of evidence, according to the affidavit. Inside the residence, investigators found projectiles and a 9 mm shell casing, but no firearm. In the Lexus, detectives recovered a 9 mm handgun, spent shell casings, several cell phones, a laptop, gloves, and blankets with what investigators described as possible bloodstains.

Crime lab analysis later confirmed that the bullets and casings recovered from the scene and the vehicle were fired from the same firearm found inside Repaci Jr.’s car, records show.

On March 30, Fort Pierce police formally charged Repaci Jr. with two counts of first-degree premeditated murder with a firearm, marking the first time homicide charges were filed in the case. Police announced the charges in an update released Tuesday, thanking the community and the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance during what they described as a complex investigation. Authorities said the investigation remains active.

The former New York City Police officer remains in custody at the Indian River County jail.
