With gas prices continuing to climb, one South Florida church is helping people ease that financial burden.
New Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, located at 1350 NW 95th Street in Miami, gave away free gas at 7-Eleven on Saturday afternoon.
They called the event “Peace at the Pump.”
The church was able to put $25 in a little more than 100 cars.
In addition to the free gas, church members prayed for people while they got their tanks filled.
AAA says the current average gas price in Florida is $4.215. A week ago, the average gas price in Florida was $3.951.
Drivers said they were grateful for the free gas.
“$25 may not seem a lot to some people, but I got $25 worth of gas and the prices going up now,” a driver said. “I thank you for it.”
The church’s pastor emphasized the importance of meeting people where they are.
“Gas prices are just skyrocketing, and a lot of people are trying to decide to get gas or groceries,” Senior Pastor/Teacher Pastor Al Jackson, Jr. said. “Today, we’re trying to help with that decision, and if you can take care of the groceries, we’ll help you with your gas.”
